"woah" (c) keanu reeves
this is a trip. not sure what i think about it. i know what my knee-jerk reaction is, but i'm trying to be objective about it too. i think i'm gonna find this film and watch it. but in the meantime, check out the trailer to "jesus camp". hold on to your seats...
the L.A. times has an article in today's religion section.
there are also a few other clips up on youTube if you wanna search for them.
it's playing in pasadena this weekend. anybody want to watch it with me and have a discussion about it afterwards at my house?

Post a Commentyou know, I was watching the trailer with my sister-in-law a few weeks ago online and she was offended, but I wasn't because I don't identify with much of what I saw in it. I had thought of blogging about it but I was busy... oh yeah, probably something with Luke. Although I'm not sure the documentary is objective, I think it is telling of how "sold out" some folks are at reaching kids ("little soldiers") for Jesus, and I'm thinking what I see from the preview that these people are clearly penticostal (not that that's bad), and just as in youth ministry (and probably the case in most denominations), there's more emphasis in getting kids saved and not necessarily discipling them and in this day and age that's hard to do without folks questioning your intentions.
bottom line... i will see it because I feel the church needs the critique and outside voice that this brings. It is discussion-worthy as long as you keep whatever preconcieved emotions at the door.
I'm not sure it's a recommended movie for people who are touchy in defense of the church and our motives, but I think it may be worth considering (once again, since I haven't seen the movie, this is hard to gauge from the trailer).
i am speechless. i am not sure what to say, but i do resonate with much of bens statements. as a former youth pasotr that really valued camps and the experiences that could be created for the purpose of shaping kids lives. i am still speechless and cannot find the words to fill the thoughts after watching the trailer. but i must say i am intrigued to see the whole piece so than if i want to comment i have something more to stand on. peace.
it's important i think to see the whole thing to really get a feel for it. i'm trying to remain objective.
like you guys said, i've been around the block with camps and stuff too. i know that the call to follow jesus often comes with emotion and stuff like that. and the call to jesus can/should be taken from a young age. i am all for raising our kids to follow jesus whole-heartedly and to repent even from a young age. it's not that...maybe it's just that the trailer edit makes it look a little...strange/militant/odd/whatever. I wonder if they edited the trailer themselves. i wouldn't say that i'm offended, but i am a little afraid of the non-contextual opinion that people may reach. especially those that won't go see it in the theatres.
actually, what really offended me was that kids duck tail. what year is it??? LOL! maybe i shouldn't speak, my kid has a mullet!
now now...let's watch the movie first.
duck tail? we always called what he has a "rat tail" (wiki link) and for some reason it wasn't even popular in the 80's when I knew kids who had them then, but yeah, it's basically a mullet. I had one kid in my youth group in skid row who had one until last year when he cut it for his job (and he was black!)
Anyway, yeah, the body of Christ is big enough for all the bad haircuts (and bad theology)... I've seen alot of bad women's (and men's) haircuts here in the midwest and I think somehow God loves them anyway...
It looks like it's not just about camps, but VBS-type things and children's program in churches too.
rat tail. i hadn't heard that, but it is the same thing. just as ugle no matter what you call it.
Pablo: if you don't mind having me along, I'd like to see it with you and everyone else. Friday night is bad for me, but if you're aiming at Saturday, I can do that.
I understand from the ABC News website that Becky Fischer is promoting the film, according to this site: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=2455343&page=1
I've read a couple of reviews of it, though I haven't seen the YouTube clips. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that this film will reinforce whatever anyone already believes.
Let me know when you decide to go, as long as the group doesn't mind having me along -
