i had an interesting experience today. wanna hear about it? i guess if you are reading this blog at all, the answer is yes. so here it is...

i was working my butt off today like a good little city worker, right? well, yesterday, i was working with a dude who's printer died. i talked to my boss about replacing it, and he told me to get the dude a B&W laser and have him use the Color Laser network printer for color prints instead (he previously had a color ink).

anyways, he didn't like that idea much. people want what they want i guess.

so he begins to complain that we aren't treating him right...whatever, people joke all the time about hand me down equipment and all that. but shoot, we're public works, we don't have any money. that's how we roll.

so the complaining i take in stride. i hear it all the time. but then he starts talking about how the other dude yesterday got a brand new one and he had to get "downgraded" to a B&W and has to walk a little for his color prints. keep in mind, that other dude was his boss. but then...and this is where it gets funky...he makes a reference to the fact that dude that got what he wanted is white and he's black.

ah, i'm starting to get it.

so i'm hoping that this guy is joking, right? so i laugh and try to play it off like i took it as a joke. nah, he kept coming. subtly, but clear. then, he points to his shirt, which was a shirt from some Rosa Parks Museum or something and tells me that one of these days he's gonna have to do like Rosa and not move to the back of the bus.

he's serious???

so i try to explain to him that we are getting rid of all the old color inkjets because they cost too much to keep up. it's cheaper to get a network color laser and ditch the old junk. so, just to make a point, i remind him that his other buddy, who happens to be black as well, got a black and white printer 2 days ago.

"see, you guys are doing all the brothers wrong".

then i just had to admit it.

"you got me man. i hate black people. i always have. and the way i'm getting back at you black people....by replacing your broken color inkjet printers with black and white lasers. that'll teach you a lesson!!!"
