ethics is a tricky thing

walk with me down the path of difficult ethical situations, will you?
i found this article yesterday in the LA Times that talked about a very interesting medical procedure/treament performed on a girl that was intended to keep her small for the purpose of being able to care for her better. her parents opted towards a very intense treatment of a hysterectomy, apendectomy, breast removal, and hormone treatment to ensure that their daughter, who cannot move beyond some minor arm and leg movement, would be smaller. the logic is that by doing these things, they could carry her and interact with her better than plopping her down on the bed and rolling her regularly to avoid bed sores.

i'm doing the family's reasoning no justice here. instead, read the words of her father.

i would love to hear what you guys think about this. i have mixed feelings.

I read the article by the father and have to say that they are making a good decision. Considering her circumstances, I would do the same. My sister had both a breast reduction and a hysterectumy in her later years, which is much more painful. This was needed, however, for her care. The fact that they are figuring this out eary is impressive to me. Many families don't think about these things until it becomes a huge burden to the caregivers.
